I first began to stress about my son’s fourth birthday when he arrived home with his Dad on Friday night – the night before the party – with a cheek so swollen he already looked like he’d stuffed one side of his mouth with several cup cakes. “Slippery dip accident”, I was told. My God: are his teeth still intact, is he in pain, how did it happen???? My worries about this were soon overtaken by my husband’s middle son who was complaining about the flu and a stomach bug. My God: have you already given it my son? Will he be ill in the middle of his party? Will middle son be well enough to do the party games???? Read the rest of this entry »

This weekend marks a watershed in my four years of motherhood. My son is having his first real birthday party. I don’t mean some cop-out party at the local McDonalds, where all food and drinks are bought and some poor teenager with a funny hat has to entertain everyone. I mean a real old-fashioned party in the family home with more kids than you can poke a stick at. And the prospect is scaring me witless. Read the rest of this entry »

We have just returned from a lovely drive from Sydney to Adelaide – and back. SYDNEY TO ADELAIDE … AND BACK? ARE YOU INSANE???? I hear you say. Well, possibly. When we were plotting out our holiday on the map, the 1427km didn’t look so bad on the way down. We had four days to meander our way across New South Wales and Victoria and then down into South Australia. But for the 1427km on the way back we really only had enough time for a one-night stop and this definitely pushed the boundaries. Mr Almost-Four coped admirably, however, with the help of a new purchase: a portable DVD player.
