I just dropped my Canadian niece and her friend off at the train station for the next leg of their Southern Hemisphere odyssey. Despite being weighed down by bulging backpacks and the 5am start, each had a spring in their steps as they waved me goodbye. The smell was the first thing I noticed on waking. The fresh, heady scent of blood-coloured rose petals, sprinkled across my pillow. There is a strange place in the Universe - not unlike the Twilight Zone (but without the scary monsters). It is a place mothers (or fathers for that matter) don’t visit very often. It is an exciting, delicious, almost forbidden place, that we long for guiltily, and take in small doses when we can get it, like expensive wine. It’s … a day off work, WITHOUT KIDS! I’ve been pouring out some of my innermost feelings on to the worldwide web via this site for eight months now and about half as long on my son’s weblog (www.worldsyoungestblogger.com). Despite other people’s misgivings about this practise, I have not had any problems other other than spam about weight loss. But recently I naievely posted some photos of children on the web’s largest photo-sharing site Flickr. Within hours I was feeling strangely violated. Read the rest of this entry »
