I’ve always loved Christmas and this year was no exception. My mother has a lavish routine of wonderful set rituals that are followed faithfully. They include heaping mountains of gifts on her children and a filling us with a fabulous Christmas meal eaten at a beautifully decorated table. The only problem is I’m starting to feel a bit slack, as my only real contribution to the whole deal is financial. And I wonder, what rituals will I have pass on? Read the rest of this entry »

I could lie and say this is my son enjoying the Christmas lights outside our house. But the truth is we drove three suburbs away to witness this appalling waste of electricity.

Have you heard? My son is going to be the next Ian Thorpe. Now that Ian has abdicated his throne as the world’s best swimmer, that leaves a nice little opening for my three-year-old.
As you can see from the picture above, he was getting into some training last night in the bath. Note how calm he is, floating loftily on his back. He could almost be asleep. I bet Thorpey was doing just this, every night, 21 years ago at home in Bankstown.

I could never have predicted that having a child would bring me closer to my sister. But this, I have found, is one of the many wonderful yet unexpected benefits of having a baby.
It’s a chance to see a family member not just in the role of how they relate to you, as a sibling, but in how they relate to your child. My sister is a most devoted aunty and although my son is still too young to really appreciate her, I have no doubt that she will always be such a giving and fun presence throughout his life.
